H.S. Boys Hockey | Owatonna 2, Mayo 1

Owatonna slipped past Rochester Mayo 2-1 Saturday in a Big Nine Conference boys hockey showdown that pitted two of the top teams in the league.

Mayo goalie Jordan Yaggy stopped 24 shots, while Owatonna’s Eric Hansen stopped 29.

"It was a game of non-stop action," Mayo coach Lorne Grosso said. "It was a goalie duel. Both Yaggy and Hansen came up with big, key saves. Yaggy stopped a couple breakaways and Hansen stopped eight to 10 point-blank shots in the third period."

Owatonna took a 1-0 lead in the second period, but Mayo’s Nick Weber answered less than two minutes later, unassisted.

Owatonna got the game-winner at 13:29 of the third period, with Matt Snorek scoring off an assist from Grant Paulson.

Owatonna improved to 3-0 in the conference and overall. Mayo is 2-1 in the Big Nine and 2-2 overall.

The Spartans play at Winona at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
