Mayo boys get overtime win

The first round of the Section 1AA tournament, was an extremely competitive and evenly played game for the Mayo boys squad.

The Spartans scored first in the second half when senior Rodrigo Lepervanche sent a cross pass to senior Brent Miller, who slid to knock the ball to the net.

Minutes later, Lakeville South responded with a long hard shot from Noel Gonzalez that deflected off of the foot of a Spartan defender for a goal. Lakeville South bested Mayo 8-5 in shots on goal in the second half. The score would remain tied until the end of regulation.

In the fifth minute of a sudden death overtime, senior Charlie Hannon put the ball up toward the goal and senior Matt Homsted knocked in a header for the winning goal.

Mayo will travel to Owatonna to match up against the Huskies on Saturday at 1 p.m.
