Dirt is moving in Southwest Rochester for a new, larger store for a local Amish furniture retailer.

The owners of Deutsch Amish Furniture have started construction of a new 12,000-square-foot center on the southwest corner of 48th Street Southwest and Commercial Drive. That’s across 48th Street from Kwik Trip and McDonald’s.

Once complete later this summer, Deutsch Amish will move from its current store at 3551 Commercial Drive Southwest.

Two Rochester couples, Brian and Michelle Rand along with Philip and Nissa Kraling, opened that 7,700-square-foot store in 2014.

Michelle Rand said the store was has been successful, so they decided to make a bigger commitment for the new location.

“We’re in it for the long haul. … We think Rochester has a need for our furniture, so we’re expanding,” she said.

The new store will have a larger display area, which will allow them to add an additional upholstery line to their current offerings of furniture.

“We have something for every room — the bedroom, dining room, office, nursery, pretty much everything,” she said

All of the furniture is crafted by Amish families in southern Minnesota and some in northern Indiana.

They are selling off the current stock in the 3551 Commercial Drive store so they can start with all fresh stock when they open in the new location.

Rand said they are very excited about the easier access to the new store, which is only one exit ramp away from the current one.

They have six employees on staff now and may add one or two more, after the move, she said.
