Rochester's Healing Touch Spa is preparing to launch a new project in downtown.

The spa firm, owned by Mary Jo Majerus, is preparing to launch Orchid Salon and Spa in the skyway level of the new Hilton hotel at Broadway and Center. It is located across the hallway from Benedict's restaurant and the offices of Powers Ventures.

If everything goes according to plan, the new 1,700-square-foot "spalon" will open on Sept. 10.

Majerus says the Orchid will offer a variety of novel spa services as well as full hair, nail and skin care. Once it opens, the current Healing Touch in the nearby University Square Mall will shift its focus to selling primarily retail products, though it will still offer some specialty spa services, such as treatments in an infrared sauna pod.

She expects eventually to grow her team of 18 to 30 specialists to staff the new Orchid site as well as well the University Square store.

Some of the new services to be offered at Orchid are hydrotherapy precision massage, a custom Himalayan salt massage table, chromotherapy and a meditation room, among others.

"We're always interested in trying fresh innovative ideas," said Majerus, who opened her first Rochester massage studio about 30 years ago.

Hydrotherapy precision massage involves a therapist using water jets to massage a client. Majerus describes the experience as being similar to moving in a jacuzzi to allow a water jet to hit a sore muscle.

The Himalayan salt table, where a client will lay on a sheet, will adjust and provide give to add to the overall benefits of massage treatments. She added that Orchid will also offer special poultice treatments on the salt table that can't be found elsewhere in the region.

Majerus also plans to eventually offer more spa services on the fifth floor of the hotel, near the swimming pool and workout gym. She expects to have an isolation float therapy tank, other hydrotherapy services and a couples treatment room located there in the future.
