A nonprofit recently opened a Rochester office to offer free financial counseling.

LSS Financial Counseling, an arm of Lutheran Social Services, opened up shop in the United Way of Olmsted County building, at 903 W. Center St., this past summer.

Cate Rysavy, senior director of financial services for LSS, said the group has been active in Rochester for more than two decades, but it always was done remotely by phone or Skype. LSS has 10 Minnesota offices and one in Wisconsin.

"For years, Rochester has been the No. 1 location where people would ask for a face-to-face appointment, but we didn't have an office," Rysavy said about the decision to open here.

The office, staffed by counselor Chad Larimer, will provide services and advice to help people deal with credit card debt, student loans, housing issues, money management, financial literacy and more.

Rysavy says this kind of information is important for anyone struggling with money problems. She points out "financial stress" was named as one of Olmsted County's top five priorities in the community health needs assessment report in 2016 and in 2013.

The goal for the first year is to serve 700 area families and individuals, she added.

LSS Financial Counseling is hosting an open house at the Rochester office from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Nov. 29 to introduce the community to the services available and to the staff.
