A quirky soap and handmade goods shop has resurfaced on Rochester's North Broadway.

The Scrub Your Butt with Soap Co. store opened the doors of a new, 700-square-foot shop at 117 N. Broadway on Monday. That's the former Almis Coffee Shop space between the Finery Bridal Chic store and the historic Castle Community complex.

Scrub Your Butt's previous location in the Kahler Grand Hotel subway closed in April. Co-owner Cindy Senjem says since then they have been looking for another spot in downtown Rochester.

"It took a while, but we're very happy with this space," said Senjem, gesturing around the shop on Thursday.

The new address is more than three times the size of the former 165-square-foot shop in the subway. That gives Scrub Your Butt the space to display all of its soap and body care products and a variety of new items, many sold on consignment.

Unlike the subway shop, the new store will be open Monday through Saturday. Exact hours are still to be worked out. It is staffed by a pair of employees. While it is still under the Almis Coffee Shop sign for now, look for new Scrub Your Butt signage to go up soon.

Scrub Your Butt is now carrying some of the European artwork and items from the Zerkalov Art Gallery, which closed on South Broadway earlier this year. The new space also features a variety of jewelry made by local artists, including Senjem. The shop also features some beads and jewelry gear from downtown Rochester's former Nordic Gypsy store.

"We hope to eventually be able to offer jewelry making classes here," Senjem added.

Crystal Merkel opened the original store in 2011 in a 165-square-foot space. She launched the business in 2003 by selling hand-made products with names like Stinky Hippie Body Wash at Thursdays Downtown events.
