Coffee continues to spread across downtown Rochester … like steam.
Café Steam is almost ready to start brewing at its latest Med City location, the fourth to sport the local Café Steam brand.
Construction has been rolling along this summer to build out a small coffee shop space on the street level of the recently opened One Discovery Square complex on the corner of Fourth Street and Second Avenue Southwest.
Owners of the café recently announced on Facebook that they will open the Discovery Square shop for a "soft opening" on Wednesday and Thursday, starting at 6:30 a.m.
"Two days of soft opens to introduce our new space … and we couldn't be more excited. Help us test out our recipes, new workflows and get your first look at this beautiful space," according to Cafe Steam's Facebook post.
Like the other cafés, this one will serve a variety of coffee and tea drinks. However, it will also have soups and sandwiches on the menu as well as a "waffle bar."
The official grand opening is slated for Sept. 3.
Café Steam, which got its start in 2015 in the popular original shop at 315 S. Broadway, opened a second Broadway location in the Doubletree Hotel skyway last summer. A third Rochester shop opened this summer inside the new Thesis Brewery at 1929 Second St. SW.
While Discovery Square One gears up with Mayo Clinic as its anchor tenant, Twin Cities-based developer M.A. Mortenson Co. is preparing plans to build an adjacent five-story, 121,295-square-foot complex to be called Two Discovery Square.
The developments are the heart of Destination Medical Center's 16-block Discovery Square sub-district described to be a “hub for bio-medicine, research and technology innovation."
The site plans for Two Discovery Square also maps out "an approximate future location" for a much smaller Three Discovery Square building on a grassy area at the southwest corner of Third Avenue Southwest and Fifth Street Southwest.
