SPRING VALLEY -- The funeral for Helen Lavina Krom will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. William Rowen officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery.
Mrs. Krom, 89, of Spring Valley, a homemaker, died Thursday morning (Sept. 30, 2004) at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.
Helen Lavina Bassett was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Freemont, Saskatchewan, Canada, and spent her early childhood in Freemont. She moved to Rochester with her family in the late 1920s and attended Rochester High School. On Dec. 27, 1933, she married Donald A. Krom at White Temple Baptist Church in Mitchell, S.D. They lived in Rochester and Spring Valley. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1948. Mrs. Krom was a charter member of Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley, was active in United Methodist Women, Sarah Circle and choir and had served on a number of committees. She enjoyed gardening and reading
Survivors include her husband; four sons, Ronald (Carol) of Mesa, Ariz., and Richard (Sharon), Roland (Jean) and Robin (Bethany), all of Rochester; five daughters, Betty (Robert) DeWitt and Debra (Timothy) Eickhoff, both of Spring Valley, Joyce (Harvey) Allen of Racine, Karen (David) Backus of Stewartville and Linda (Gerald) Niemeyer of Saukville, Wis.; 21 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two grandsons, two sisters and four brothers.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley and an hour before the service Tuesday at the church.
