Herbert Otto Getschmann — Lake City

LAKE CITY — The Mass of Christian Burial for Herbert Otto Getschmann will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake City; Father Richard Dernek will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Mr. Getschmann, 79, of Lake City, died Tuesday (March 31, 2009) at his home.

He was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Wabasha to Otto and Mary (Kalaski) Getschmann. He grew up in Wabasha, joined the Army in 1950 and served during the Korean War. He served two tours of duty. On Feb. 11, 1950, he married Vernis DeFrang in Wabasha. They lived in Wabasha until 1958, then moved to their farm in Mount Pleasant Township, Wabasha County.

Mr. Getschmann worked for the railroad with his father for a short time; then worked construction throughout the Midwest for 35 years with Local 512 Iron Workers Union. He then farmed full-time with his family. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, VFW Post 8729 and American Legion Post 110.

His wife preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 1995.

Survivors include three daughters, Karen (Rick) Thorie of Oak Center, Kathy (Raymond) Lafferty and Barb Getschmann, both of Lake City; two sons, Charles and Randy, both of Lake City; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eva Newman of Dassel, Minn., and Yvonne Blim of Wabasha; a brother, Otto of Wabasha; and special friend Ramona DeFrang. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary; a brother, Robert, and two infant brothers; and two sisters, Mary Petroff and Esther Getschmann.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City, with a Prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour before the service at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Lake City VFW Post 8729 and American Legion Post 110 will provide military honors.
