Hiawatha Senior League opens today

The Hiawatha Senior Baseball League opens its 2002 season at 7 p.m. today at Mayo Field when the Rochester Businessmen take on the Rochester Stars.

Led by manager Scott Gwaltney, the Businessmen are perennial powerhouses, having won the league championship in 1998 and 2000. The Stars feature former minor league pitcher Jeff Mort and the league's oldest player, 69-year-old George Battey.

The season begins in earnest Sunday, with a doubleheader at Mayo Field and a third game at Hudson Field. The seven-team league for players 28 and older is entering its 11th season.
