Holiday weekend big for area tracks

There is plenty of racing action around the area on this Fourth of July weekend, starting tonight in Owatonna, where the United States Modified Touring Series makes its second appearance of the season.

Blooming Prairie's Tommy Myer won the last USMTS race there on June 24th.

The series then moves to Cresco for a race on Friday night.

Deer Creek is hosting its second annual Firecracker 40, with a 40-lap feature for Late Models and a 30-lap feature for Modifieds. Late Models are racing for a $1,200 first-place check, while the Modified winner will take home $1,000.

Dodge County Speedway in Kasson is featuring a WISSOTA Sprint Car special Sunday night.

Drew Jech, 15-year-old son of Jeff Jech, drove in the Modified Lite race last weekend at Deer Creek. He finished seventh of 11 cars in his heat race and was 17th in the feature. His father won his heat race and was sixth in the feature. Jeff Jech leads the Modified Lite point standings.

Ticket information for the 24th annual Gopher 50 Late Model race on July 16 in Owatonna: Tickets available by mail at 5473 S.E. 108th St., Blooming Prairie, MN, 55917. Also at Select Motors in Owatonna and at NAPA stores in Blooming Prairie, Mankato and Rochester

Reserved seats are $24. A pit pass is $30.

The event is the largest presented by the UMP Summer National series and will pay $20,000 to the winner.

A Modified race, open this year to anyone who wants to pay the $100 entry fee, will pay $4,000 to win.
