Honk!' returns to Plainview theater

Back for the second straight year, "Honk!" will begin a six-week run at Jon Hassler Theater in Plainview with a discounted preview performance July 18.

The modern-day take on Hans Christian Andersen's "Ugly Duckling" follows Ugly, a duckling whose looks draw prejudice and ridicule from everyone around him. The play got such a large following last year that the Jon Hassler Theater brought back.

"The word-of-mouth was great on it," artistic director Sally Childs said. "People said 'Do "Honk!" again. Do "Honk!" again.'"

The musical comedy by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe has won three best musical awards: The Laurence Olivier Award, the FNB VITA Award in South Africa and the Elliot Norton Award in the United States.

"It's about our fears, how we conquer them, get back on track and become beautiful people," Childs said.

Performances will be at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. Additional 1:30 p.m. performances will be Aug. 1 and Aug. 22.

Opening night is July 19 for the production, which runs until Aug. 24. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors (62 or older) and $10 for students and children. All tickets are $10 for the July 18 preview performance.
