Honkers reach 50-win milestone

Rochester wins Saturday, loses Sunday finale

The Rochester Honkers snapped a losing streak and notched their milestone 50th win in the final weekend of Northwoods League college baseball regular season.

Rochester beat Brainerd 4-1 on Saturday at Mayo Field behind a three-hit pitching effort and late-inning offensive heroics.

Then Sunday, things were reversed as the Honkers got only five hits in a 4-1 loss to Brainerd in a game delayed 20 minutes by rain.

Brainerd built a 3-0 lead in the first five innings and the Honkers were never able to close the gap. Rochester finishes the regular season with a superb 50-18 record.

Now the playoffs begin tonight in Madison with a best-of-three series.

Saturday's winning pitcher Scott Eckard allowed only three hits and one earned run over seven innings and improved to 8-2.

Randy Wild pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Jake Toohey a 1-2-3 ninth for his league-best 24th save.

Rochester rallied for three runs on three hits in the sixth inning. League MVP Efren Navarro Jr. provided the big hit, a two-run double to the right corner.

The Honkers had 11 hits with two each from Jason White, Kyle Bowley and Will Cherry.
