Honkers win final game of swing into Canada

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO -- Things were starting to look awfully ugly for the Rochester Honkers. Canada was leaving a lousy taste in their mouths.

Then, finally, came Sunday. And with it was some face saving. The Honkers, who lead the South Division of the Northwoods Baseball League, salvaged one win out of a four-game series with the Thunder Bay Border Cats. Rochester won Game 4 7-5 as it bounced back from a 3-0 deficit.

Jason Driscoll (Purdue) got the pitching win, as he worked the final three innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Jake Toohey (Illinois) had started. He permitted just four hits and three runs.

The Honkers delivered a whopping 11 hits against four Border Cats pitchers. Nate Yoho (Iowa) was the leader, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Curtis Ledbetter (Nebraska) had two hits and Ron Bethke (Austin Peay State) had two.

The Honkers, who have had trouble with defense, were perfect in the field Sunday.

The Honkers were also error-free Saturday, but the result was still a 3-2 loss to the Border Cats. Pat O'Neil (Nebraska) was the losing pitcher, lasting the first five innings and permitting all three runs. He struck out eight.

The Honkers totaled seven hits, and got two each from Ledbetter and Bethke.

Rochester begins a two-game road trip at Alexandria tonight (7:05), before returning home to play Waterloo on Wednesday.
