PINE ISLAND -- A memorial service for James Edward McGowan will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Macken Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Harry Jewison officiating. A funeral Mass will be in El Paso, Texas, later this week. Burial will be in Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso.
Mr. McGowan, 71, of El Paso, formerly of Pine Island, died Saturday (March 8, 2003) at Rochester Methodist Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born April 3, 1931, in Dodge County in the Pine Island area. He grew up on the family farm and married Irene C. Huerkamp on April 19, 1954, in Rochester. He served in the Army in Korea during the Korean War and was in the service for 22 years. Since retiring, he lived in El Paso and worked for Hatch Electronics.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Jodeen (Greg) Alseth of Seattle; three sons, James E. (Susie) of Midland, Texas, Robert (Dawn) of El Paso and Charles (Michelle) of Bremerton, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; five brothers, Ralph (Joan) of Oronoco, Clifford (Elise) of West Concord, Harold (Ella Mae) of Tacoma, Wash., Joseph (Joan) of Fox Lake, Wis., and Donald (Kathryn) of Caledonia; four sisters, Margaret Keefe of Douglas, Ivanelle Steinke of Seattle, and Mary Kollasch and Patricia Allen, both of Pine Island. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
