Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton surprises top seed Faribault B.A.

Second-seeded Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton overcame a 10-0 deficit at the start of the game to upend top-seeded Faribault Bethlehem Academy 47-44 in Friday’s Section One, Class A West Subsection boys basketball championship game.

"Earlier in the year we would have lost this game," JWP coach Ted Hammond said after the final horn at Mayo Civic Auditorium.

The Bulldogs (19-10)had lost a pair of close games to B.A. during the regular season, but this time they bounced back.

"I knew we could beat them," Hammond said.

The game wasn’t decided until the final seconds. Jacob Schrom’s steal and layup game the Bulldogs a 47-44 lead with 25 seconds left. The Cardinals missed a couple of late shots, including a 3-pointer that would have tied the game.


Wyatt Wheelock led JWP with 12 points. Josh Kopachek and Sam Hartfiel had 11 each. Kopachek scored eight in the second half and Hartfiel had two big 3-pointers when the Bulldogs trailed.

Jordan Clark and Drew Mathews had 11 points each for the Cardinals (24-5) while Chris Palmer added 10. Bethlehem Academy does not start a single senior.
