John T. Schmit -- Rose Creek

ROSE CREEK -- A funeral Mass for John T. Schmit will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Rose Creek, with the Rev. Ruben Spinler officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, with military rites by the Adams American Legion Post No. 146.

Mr. Schmit, 91, of Rose Creek died Saturday (Jan. 12, 2002) at Adams Healthcare Center.

He was born Feb. 26, 1910, in Rose Creek. He served in the army in Germany, France and England from 1941 to 1945. He served during the Korean War for a year. He married Louise Adelmann on May 10, 1952. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion and Catholic Order of Foresters. He was an usher for 50 years and caretaker of St. Peter's Cemetery in Rose Creek for 20 years. He was a volunteer for the fire department for 20 years and was city clerk for 20 years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and playing cards.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Richard (Marjorie) of Cannon Falls; three daughters, Elaine (Mike) Mills of LeRoy, Rita (Steve) Knapp of Pine Island and Dianne Schmit of Rose Creek; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a brother, Louis (Maureen) of Rose Creek. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Mayer Funeral Home, where there will be a 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7:30 p.m. wake service, and for one hour before the service Tuesday at the church.
