HARMONY -- The funeral was today at St. Agnes Catholic Church at Plymouth Rock, Minn., for Joseph LaVern Whalen, 80, of Harmony. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Whalen died Friday (Oct. 1, 2004) at Harmony Health Care.
He was born May 28, 1924, and after graduating from high school, served in the Navy during WW II. On Jan. 6, 1945, he married Doris Mae Wernet and they farmed in rural Canton. He enjoyed dancing, Belgian horses and spending time with his family.
Survivors include two daughters, Rosella (Greg) Carolan of Decorah, Iowa, and Linda (Ronald) Fishbaugher of Harmony; five sons, Dennis, Thomas (Marsha) and Blaine (Kathy), all of Harmony, and Joseph (Darcy) Jr. and Keri (Connie), all of Burr Oak, Iowa; 25 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Edward of Canton, and LaVern (Nelda) and Larry (Shirley), all of Rochester; a sister, Lucy Took of La Crosse, Wis. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, three brothers and a sister.
