Mason City closes bridge deemed dangerous

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — Mason City officials ordered a bridge closed indefinitely after an inspection that concluded it is dangerous.
The City Council ordered it closed Tuesday night, based on an inspection by WHKS Engineers.
The inspection was done Jan. 25. Some residents are questioning why it took so long to close the bridge if it posed a danger.

City Administrator Brent Trout says after the inspection, the engineering firm studied its findings and sent its report to the city on March 4.
Trout says city officials then studied it and reached their own conclusions.
The bridge, built in 1917, will be closed until the city considers whether to repair it or build a new bridge.
