NASCAR apology for tires
NASCAR apologized on Tuesday for Sunday’s caution-filled Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
"I can’t say enough how sorry we are, and you know, it’s our responsibility being NASCAR that we don’t go through this situation again," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition, on a teleconference. "We’ve already got after it, and we’re moving forward with a plan to get ahead of the situation so we don’t go through this again.
". . . The race didn’t come off like we had hoped. The fans didn’t get what they exactly wanted, and we’ll do everything in our power and it won’t happen again."
Sunday’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway had 11 cautions, six called by NASCAR to allow teams to change tires before their tires wore out. Tires couldn’t go much longer than 10 laps without wearing out.
Pemberton said NASCAR expected the track to improve about 40 laps into the race as it had in previous years. He said the tire compound was similar to that which has been used at Indianapolis for three previous races. The track surface also has not changed since 2005.
Sunday was the first time the Car of Tomorrow raced at IMS. The new car took several years to develop and debuted at selected tracks in 2007. NASCAR switched to the COT for all races in 2008.
"(Goodyear has) been running load sensors at all their tire tests comparing last year or the old car compared to the new car," Pemberton said. "So they’ve been getting plenty of information on what it takes to develop a tire that’s a little more durable and will handle the loads."
