L/P baseball aust 4-10 DONE

MABEL — The Lyle/Austin Pacelli baseball team lost by the 10-run rule to Mabel-Canton in Monday’s season opener.

The visiting Lyle/Pacelli Athletics took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of this Southeast Conference game, but the advantage didn’t last long. The M-C Cougars rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the first and went on to win 13-3 in five innings.

Sam Stier walked to lead off the first inning for L/P, then stole second and third base. Mike Williamson followed with an RBI double to plate the first run of the game. But Williamson was left aboard, and M-C quickly erased the deficit.

The Cougars banged out five hits in their first-inning barrage and the competitive part of the game was over. M-C later led 12-1 after the third inning. Stier was the pitcher for L/P and went the distance in the loss.

"Sam struggled with his control in the bottom of the first inning with three walks to go along with those five hits," L/P coach Steve Baumann said. "We got off to a good start with the early run, but they put us away with the big hits."

Zach Lind did the most damage off Stier. Lind had a triple to score three runs in the third inning. This was part of a four-run rally that would eventually lead to the shortened game.

L/P scored two runs in the top of the fifth, but M-C came back with a run in the bottom of the frame to invoke the 10-run rule. Despite the loss, the Athletics showed some positive signs on the field.

Mike Lonergan walked to lead off and ignite the two-run rally by the Athletics in the top of the fifth. After an out, Aaron Juenger was hit by a pitch, then a passed ball sent the runners to second and third with one out.

Following another strikeout, Stier helped his cause with a two-run double.

"This is the first live pitching the guys have seen and they did pretty well at times," Baumann said. "When they put up the new school in Lyle, the batting cage got wrecked and now we don’t have one. So, we couldn’t even have batting practice these last couple of weeks.

"The guys have been just hitting off tees in the gym. It was a loss, but at least we got the season started and scored a few runs."

Lyle/Pacelli (0-1, 0-1 SEC) plays at Glenville-Emmons on Friday.
