L/P boys bb aust 2-21 DONE

BLOOMING PRAIRIE — The Lyle/Austin Pacelli boys basketball team had no answer for the low-post play of the Blooming Prairie Blossoms on Tuesday night.

The Blossoms held a 39-22 edge in rebounding over the Lyle/Pacelli Athletics and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds in the non-conference game. This led to numerous second-chance scoring opportunities, and the home team rolled to a 68-51 win.

Mitch Williamson led the Athletics in scoring with 12 points, but he was the only player on his team to reach double figures. In contrast, the Blossoms had three players in double figures and a dozen different guys scored on the night.

"We were up 4-2 in the opening minutes and the next thing we knew, it was 16-4 in favor of them," L/P coach Reid Olson said. "We stopped running our offense, and they played tough defense, so it was hard to move. We played good in stretches, but couldn’t get them boxed out in the paint, and they killed us with all of those offensive rebounds."

Despite the rough start, the visitors weathered the storm and cut the deficit to five points late in the first half. Matt Zellmer of Blooming Prairie then hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds. This gave the Blossoms some momentum and they were up by nine at halftime.

"They’re a very athletic group and aggressive on the inside," Olson said. "We didn’t match their intensity in the lane and got badly outrebounded. That led to a lot of second chance points and then, they got to the foul line to seal it."

Mike Williamson had nine steals and five points for the Athletics. Ryan Fett hit a couple of 3-pointers and Dusty Riste added eight points with a trey in the road loss.

L/P (8-16) returns to Southeast Conference play with a road trip to Houston on Thursday night. This is the final game of the regular season.
