Lady Blue Devils drop pair to division leaders

WILLMAR — The Riverland softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Ridgewater on Friday.

Both of the games ended via the eight-run rule in the Minnesota Community College Conference, South Division doubleheader.

Ridgewater (16-0) won by scores of 11-0 in five innings and 9-1 in six innings. The Lady Warriors of Ridgewater remain atop the division standings with the sweep.

Amanda Follmuth and Lindsay Larson got the only hits for the Lady Blue Devils of Riverland in the opener. Amber Wilson was the pitcher for the visitors and took the loss.

In the second game, the Lady Devils came up with more hits but they didn’t translate into many runs. Riverland got its only run of the day in the top of the third inning and cut the deficit to 4-1.

Errors then let the divisional contest slip away and it turned into an eight-run game in the sixth inning. Wilson took the loss, but seven of the runs she gave up were unearned.

"Amber had great command of her change-up and pitched well against the league leaders," Riverland coach Dave Lillemon said. "She deserved better than we showed. They took the lead with four runs in the second inning and all were after a two-out error. Three more runs were unearned in the sixth, so it was a tough day in the field."

Despite the lopsided loss, the Lady Devils collected nine hits in the late game. Kim Bestul, Amanda Follmuth, and Tracee Crowley all had two hits for the Lady Devils.

"We had a little handicap with Liz Morrill and Megan Vollbrecht out of the lineup due to classes in school," Lillemon said. "Amanda McGuire was sick but she played, so we’re a little beat up.

"Still, we battled the whole way and the ladies hit the ball pretty well in the second game."

Riverland (7-17, 7-13) plays at Fergus Falls this afternoon for another divisional twinbill.
