Lady Devils get swept on the road

WORTHINGTON — The Riverland softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Minnesota West on Friday.

Minnesota West won by scores of 11-2 and 16-8 in the Minnesota Community College Conference, South Division twinbill. Riverland had swept the earlier doubleheader between the two teams in Austin.

Amber Wilson was the pitcher in the opener for the Lady Blue Devils of Riverland and struck out two in the loss. Sam Schmidt, Amanda McGuire, Kim Bestul and Liz Morrill all had one hit for Riverland.

Morrill was the pitcher in the late game and took the loss. Riverland had its biggest hitting game of the season with 17 total hits, but it wasn’t enough to stave off defeat.

"Offensively we hit the ball hard, and I was very pleased with our bats," Riverland coach Dave Lillemon said. "We beat them at home, but they were tough on their field and we couldn’t get them out. Defensively we just didn’t do the job, and they really hit the ball."

Riverland (6-12, 6-8 MCCC South) plays at Rochester Community and Technical College on Monday.
