Lady Devils lose two on the road

Riverland falls at Fergus Falls

FERGUS FALLS — The Riverland softball team closed out a long weekend on the road with a pair of losses to MSCTC-Fergus Falls on Saturday.

Riverland got solid pitching efforts from Liz Morrill and Amber Wilson in the Minnesota Community College Conference doubleheader. There just wasn’t enough offense as the Lady Blue Devils of Riverland lost 4-2 in the first game and then 5-2 in the late affair.

"We left the bases loaded three times in the first game," Riverland coach Dave Lillemon said. "We just couldn’t get the big hit."

The Lady Devils put up 13 hits in the opener. Samantha Schmidt, Amanda Follmuth, and Amber Wilson all had two hits. Tracee Crowley had three hits and a RBI.

Morrill had seven strikeouts and didn’t walk anybody in going the distance on the hill. Only two of the runs given up by the Riverland pitcher in the first game were earned.

"Liz pitched fabulous and she kept getting out of jams," Lillemon said. "She had a great change-up, and kept their hitters off-balance."

In the second game, the home team put up three runs in the bottom of the first and led the whole way against Wilson.

Fergus Falls had three hits to open the bottom of the first and then, a two-run double got the scoring started. A subsequent groundout then made it 3-0 in favor of the home team after the first inning.

The Lady Devils got a couple of runs back in the top of the second. Follmuth led off with a base hit, and Wilson walked to put two runners aboard.

After a couple of outs, the Riverland rally looked to be fizzling out, but Lindsay Larson laced a two-run double to get her team back in the game. Fergus then added a couple of runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.

"I’m proud of team, they played hurt and banged up on a long road trip," Lillemon said. "They battled the whole way; we just didn’t have much luck on the road."

Riverland (7-19, 7-15 MCCC South) plays host to Rochester Community and Technical College at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the regular season finale.
