LaVern Lindbert 'Lindy' Thurnau -- Austin

AUSTIN -- A memorial service for LaVern Lindberg "Lindy" Thurnau will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin, with the Rev. Randy Petersen officiating. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Mr. Thurnau, 76, of 823 Fourth Ave. N.E., Austin, a retired longtime Hormel Foods Corp. employee, died Saturday (Sept. 20, 2003) at his home.

Born July 5, 1927, in Austin, he lived with his grandparents in Owatonna most of his childhood and attended Owatonna schools. From November 1944 to July 1948, he served in the Navy, was trained at Great Lakes, Ill., and served on the USS Renville, the USS Saidor and the USS Seminole. He received the World War II Victory Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, American Theater and Good Conduct ribbons. He began working at Hormel after his discharge. His interests included carpentry and woodworking projects, hunting, fishing and restoring old guns.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda of Stevens Point, Wis.; and a son, Gregory of California. Two brothers preceded him in death.

Friends may call half an hour before the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
