WINONA — The powerful Rochester Patriots weren’t so powerful Wednesday night. Winona took both ends of a doubleheader from the Patriots, winning 9-8 and 6-2 in American Legion baseball.
"It was kind of a disappointing day for us," Patriots coach Terry Heiderscheit said. "Winona did a good job and did what they had to do to win both games."
The Patriots jumped to a 4-0 lead in Game 1 but couldn’t hold it. They were hurt badly by five errors.
Brian Ness was 2-for-4 for the Patriots with a home run and three RBIs.

In the second game the Patriots fell behind early, trailing 4-0 after three innings. Rochester didn’t get on the scoreboard until the top of the seventh inning. Joe Moen was 3-for-3 for the Patriots and Brian Anderson 2-4.
The Patriots are 9-2 in the First District and 17-6 overall. The play in the Gopher Classic in Bloomington at 7:30 p.m. Friday. They open against the Bloomington Gold.
