ROCHESTER — The funeral for Lela S. Henke will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester, with the Rev. Nancy Wheeler Handlon officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Henke, 98, died Friday (Oct. 31, 2008) at the Stewartville Care Center.
Lela Nickerson was born Dec. 28, 1909, in Platteville, Wis. She spent her early years in Wisconsin, moved to Rochester in 1927 and graduated from Rochester High School in 1928. She married Amos R. Henke on Sept. 15, 1933, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Mr. Henke survives.
She was a cook at Home Bakery in Rochester for many years, and was also a cook at Golden Hill School. A member of Christ United Methodist Church, she was involved with United Methodist Women. In retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and visiting with their children and grandchildren. She enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting and sewing.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Henke is survived by a daughter, Donna Lee (Robert) Sprenger of Breham, Texas; three sons, Lloyd of Oak Bluff, Mass., Leland (Wanda) of Niobrara, Neb., and Steven of Rochester; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Alice (Fezer) Nickerson; two brothers and a sister.

Visitation will be an hour before the service at the church.
