Leona Harmon — Harmony

HARMONY —The funeral for Leona Harmon of Harmony will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Big Springs in rural Harmony. Burial will be in Big Springs Cemetery.

Mrs. Harmon, 84, died Saturday (March 31, 2007) at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.

Leona Burmeister was born July 27, 1922, in Harmony. She attended Big Springs School in rural Harmony. She worked on her parents’ farm, mowing hay with horses and shocking grain. When she was 15, she drove a new John Deere tractor to cut grain and load hay. At 19, she started working for Ruth Benson (Johnson) in her store and continued to work there for 10 years.

She married Willard Harmon on June 22, 1952. They farmed Leona’s home farm until Willard died in 1983. She worked in the kitchen at Harmony Community Health Center for 10 years and did volunteer work. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school, held offices in the ELCW and served on the church council. She also helped sew quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She continued to live on her home farm, where she enjoyed gardening, watching birds and deer, and baking.

She is survived by a daughter, Connie (Brian) Goodman of Lime Springs, Iowa; a son, Randy (Roxy) of Ellsworth, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Callie Lee; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, three sisters and a stepdaughter.


Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony and an hour before the service at the church.
