Leslie H. Rupkalvis -- Rochester

ROCHESTER -- The funeral for Leslie H. Rupkalvis will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester, with the Rev. James W. Heining officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Rupkalvis, 78, of Rochester, died Friday (April 12, 2002) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

He was born Nov. 3, 1923, in Clayton, S.D. He moved to Rochester and graduated from Rochester High School in 1942. He served in the Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1946 in the Atlantic and Pacific as a ship's chief steward. On June 19, 1948, he married Barbara Quandt at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church in Racine. She is a retired JC Penney employee. He worked for Standard Oil Pipeline until 1948, and for 40 years worked as an operating engineer for Franklin Heating Station, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, a charter member of Local 756 Operating Engineers and served as president. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jeffry (Anne) of Missoula, Mont.; two daughters, Judith (Edwin) Bartlett of Rochester, and Jayne (Russell) Piazza of Missoula; six grandchildren; and a sister, Anne (Robert) Bornfleth of Rochester. Eight brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ranfranz Funeral Home in Rochester, and one hour before the service on Monday at the church.
