I'm a 70-something grandmother who values government fiscal responsibility. For that reason I usually vote Republican. But the Republican Party today is no longer fiscally responsible. Rather it was our Democratic president and his party that gave us a balanced budget, real job growth and economic prosperity.
Since coming to office President Bush has looted the federal budget surplus gained under President Clinton, and has plunged us into mounting debt. The federal government now spends $1.7 billion more each day than it collects in taxes, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
The Bush tax cuts have added $114 billion to our deficit, but benefit largely people with incomes over $200,000 per year, while the largest tax burden, as a percentage of income, is borne by middle income citizens with incomes $51,000 to $75,600.
President Bush has raided the Social Security Trust Fund and emptied its entire $1.5 trillion to pay for his tax cuts and his oil war in Iraq. In less than 14 years those funds will be needed to pay for Social Security benefits to retirees, but they're gone!
President Bush is crippling our economic future by exporting jobs to foreign countries, while decreasing our ability to recover economic losses. John Kerry has been endorsed by 10 Nobel Prize-winning economists. I'm following their lead and will vote for John Kerry.
