I read with interest Tom Ostrom's column regarding ways to revitalize Rochester's downtown.
In my capacity as a member of Mayo Clinic Volunteer Services, I am often asked why we don't have a cyber cafe in this town. I don't have an answer for this question, but it strikes me that in this community it might be a viable option. At the same time that we are trying to attract locals to the downtown area, it is also important to remember the transient population that comes here for medical care, as well as the vacationers who have chosen to stay here for a few days.
City and county residents can benefit from having a cyber cafe as well. Think of all the students in the area who don't always have access to a computer for doing research or writing their papers.
A cyber cafe might help to revitalize our downtown. It's not the whole answer, I know, but it could be a start. If it were set up such that people were comfortable using it and it was advertised around town and at the hotels, some people would come and maybe use other downtown facilities as well.
And now I ask the question that has so often been asked of me, "Why doesn't this community have a cyber cafe?"
