Think energy on Nov. 2. Lifestyle and values are determined by and evident from the use of energy. Economic growth and success are determined by what kind of energy sources we use, where we find them, and how much we use.
Americans consume 2.5 million barrels of Middle Eastern oil per day. (At $49 per barrel that is $122 million per day!) Our global relationships, our defense, and national security all relate to our energy policy. Dependence on foreign fossil fuel is killing our soldiers and stealing our environment.
The work ethic, technical knowledge, and industrial resources that took us to the moon and mapped the human genome could harness the power of the sun, wind, waves, crops, and waste to produce renewable American energy. Other technical advances depend on this one. The question is not whether we shall do this, but when and under what conditions.
Sen. Kerry's plan is detailed at www.johnkerry.com. He has devoted much of his Senate career to related issues. If we want to improve our foreign relations, lessen our risk of terrorists' attacks, improve our economy, preserve our environment, and sustain our quality of life, we would give thought to the issue of energy. On Nov. 2 elect someone with an intelligent energy policy, Sen. John Kerry.
