Yes, Rochester does need a movie theater downtown. Having theaters in the Galleria not only gave people something to do but was a good reason to bring people downtown.
Count the number of apartment and condo buildings, plus all the hotels full of people who try to find something to do. Live theater is not the answer. Few parents could afford to bring their family and pay $25 to $50 for each ticket. I often notice families come into the movie with their popcorn, having a night out together.
Gus, what will this do to your food stands in the food court? How will it affect your renters in the Galleria and eating places downtown?
If Chafoulias Co. did not own the big new theaters, this closing would not be taking place. This stadium seating is not for everyone and after the newness wears off and all the hype on it wears off, I still think you'll have your downtown market.
Gus, weren't you the one (when the Times Square project was being proposed) who said "Rochester needs something to bring people downtown?" Change your mind, Gus. You were the one who developed our downtown when it was stagnant for years. Don't take a step backward.
