"I have to tell you right now -- I didn't plan to talk about this -- right now I feel her, I feel her presence," John Edwards said in his record-breaking $6.5 million verdict for Jennifer Campbell, born with cerebral palsy. "She's inside me and she's talking to you. …; And this is what she says to you. She says, 'I don't ask for your pity. What I ask for is your strength. And I don't ask for your sympathy, but I do ask for your courage.'"

There are reasons why the Caesarean section rate has risen from approximately 6 percent in 1970 to 26 percent today without a decrease in the rate of cerebral palsy. There are reasons why physicians are afraid to see high-risk patients. It's because of people like Edwards who sanctimoniously channel the spirits of the unfortunate not for justice but for profit.
