Within the last year, I have relocated to Rochester with my family from Texas. I am pleased to say that so far we have found our new city of residence to be very livable and full of wonderfully kind people. Happily, Rochester has afforded us numerous outstanding professional, social and recreational opportunities.
Nevertheless, since moving here I have found it somewhat odd and disappointing that the charming and historic downtown district is somewhat limited in terms of shopping, dining and entertainment. It seems that this entire downtown area, though alive on workday afternoons, is otherwise generally "asleep" and has yet to fulfill its tremendous potential. It seems that on weekends, I have found it quite difficult to find a good reason to head downtown for leisure.
Given the relatively limited opportunities for shopping in Rochester outside of Apache Mall, I find it regrettable that the so-named "Time Square" project aimed at further downtown revitalization was not supported or adopted by the Rochester City Council. It is especially disappointing to know that the project given preference over this effort is being driven by a non-local group.
I hope that similar "Time Square" ventures will receive due support and consideration in the future should another opportunity arise.
