RED WING -- Goodhue County Veterans Service office will no longer fill prescriptions, make medical appointments, Nathan Pelz has decided. The county hired him as the new veterans service officer on July 2. In a letter dated Aug. 6, Pelz informed county veterans that a few changes will be put in place. He wrote:
“It has come to my attention that the Goodhue Veterans Office was renewing prescriptions and making medical appointments for the veterans. For the safety of the privacy of our veterans, the office will no longer be refilling prescriptions or making medical appointments.”
According to Anne Sonnee, the communications director for the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, it is up to the county veterans service officer to decide if the local office will carry out these tasks.
“MDVA does not have a preference or recommendation regarding CVSOs providing this level of service, as again, each CVSO is unique and has to balance their workload as they deem appropriate,” Sonnee told the Republican Eagle.
Sonnee also noted, “Veterans are encouraged to use online resources such as MyHealtheVet to schedule appointments or refill prescriptions, or use one of several other options to refill prescriptions.”
If a veteran is unable to call the pharmacy to refill a prescription for any reason (for example, not being able to hear the prompts), the individual can visit the Goodhue County Veterans Service Office for assistance.
For those who had relied on the Goodhue County office for medical appointments and prescription refills, Pelz included a step-by-step process for prescription refills and scheduling medical appointments. Both are automated systems:
Dial the number that is on the prescription bottle.
Type in the veteran’s full Social Security number.
For prescriptions, press “2.”
For a refill, press “1.”
Enter the prescription number on the bottle of medicine that is being refilled.
There will be prompts to fill another prescription if needed.
Press “2” to schedule an appointment.
For a primary or specialty care appointment, press “3.”
You will then be connected with a live person.
