John Howe, the Republican candidate for Minnesota Secretary of State, said he had a “nice conversation” with James Bunner, but the fired KTTC-TV multimedia journalist is pursuing other offers.
“I only have less than 30 days left (in my campaign),” Howe said. “And he’s looking for something a little more stable.”
Bunner was fired by KTTC-TV for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat during President Trump’s political rally last week in Rochester.
Calling the firing unfair, the Howe campaign reached out to Bunner to offer him a job.
Tim Droogsma, Howe’s campaign manager and a former reporter, said he was not “second-guessing” the station’s decision. “They’ve got standards, as all media businesses do, but it just seemed a little bit over the top for us,” Droogsma said.
Droogsma, campaign manager for the Howe campaign, said Bunner would have filled in at a time of need for the Howe campaign as it made its final push for voters before the Nov. 6 election. Howe is running against incumbent DFL Secretary of State Steve Simon.
