Joyce Sutphen, Minnesota Poet Laureate, will be one of the poets featured alongside local writers of verse in the upcoming Winona Poetry Walk.

WINONA — If poetry is your mission, consider this task from the Winona Fine Arts Commission.

The group is asking poets to submit verse with flair, and those stanzas accepted will be stamped into sidewalks needing repair. Local wordsmiths are asked to apply, and their words will share the space with Minnesota's poets from on high. That's right, into cement your words would be set, with those of past Minnesota poet laureates.

The rules for this contest are simple to follow, up to eight lines of 36 characters or 11 lines at 26 characters they will allow. The deadline for submission is Jan. 31 ("thirty-one"), with winning poems cemented during an April celebration. Each person may submit up to two poems for consideration.

The goal is to create the Winona Poetry Walk around downtown, with verse that will make you think, laugh, cry and frown.
