RED WING — Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Unit 1, northwest of Red Wing, was shut down at 7:56 p.m. Monday to replace a reactor coolant pump seal.
Work is expected to take about two weeks. The seal poses no danger to the public, according to Xcel Energy, which owns the plant. Unit 2 is still up and running.
The plant's two pressurized water reactors generate 1,076 megawatts of electricity.
