Thursday's Downtown will shift south next year.
With renovations planned for Peace Plaza in 2020, the Rochester Downtown Alliance needs to relocate the weekly summer event.
“Downtown stakeholders, various city departments and additional community partners were involved in the RDA's vetting process of multiple Thursdays Downtown 2020 options,” RDA Executive Director Holly Masek said. “The layout direction in which we’re likely heading utilizes First Avenue, which will be familiar to attendees, and gets people experiencing the event in a new section of downtown.”
The planned event footprint option activates the following downtown areas:
- First Avenue Southwest from Second Street Southwest to Fourth Street Southwest.
- Third Street Southwest from the Third Street Alley to First Avenue Southwest.
- Fourth Street Southwest from Second Avenue Southwest to Broadway Avenue.
The event footprint must undergo a formal permitting process with the city before the final layout is confirmed.
This potential event footprint is completely contiguous, making it safer for attendees and presenting an opportunity to create different atmospheres within the event’s footprint, the RDA statement said. Some aspects of Thursdays Downtown 2020, like the use of two stages, will remain. Stages are planned near the intersections of First Avenue and Second Street Southwest and Fourth Street Southwest and Broadway.
“We view Peace Plaza’s upcoming construction as an opportunity to rethink and to relocate some of our core events, activating new areas of downtown in the process,” Masek said.
Since Peace Plaza construction isn't expected to begin until spring, the RDA's SocialICE event is being planned at Peace Plaza this winter.
