PRAIRIE ISLAND — The votes have been counted for the election of the Prairie Island Indian Community Tribal Council.
The five-member council will consist of three long-term members and two newcomers, according to a statement released by the tribe. Michael Childs Jr. and Valentina Mgeni were elected to their first terms on tribal council.
Earning re-election were Council President Shelley Buck and council members Lucy Taylor and Johnny Johnson. Buck will serve her fifth term on the council. For Taylor and Johnson, it is their 10th and 12th terms, respectively, the statement noted.
Council members serve two years per term.
All the council members will be sworn in for the upcoming term on the tribal council on Wednesday, then all members will vote among themselves as to who serves as council president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and assistant secretary-treasurer.
