Losses bump RCTC from playoff picture

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

AUSTIN — It took a little too long for Rochester Community and Technical College to get its bats going on Saturday.

By the time the Yellowjackets heated up, it was too late, as Riverland Community College swept a doubleheader by scores of 6-2 and 7-2.

The losses took RCTC out of contention for a berth in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference state tournament.

RCTC managed a total of seven hits in the doubleheader — four hits in the first game, three in the second — as the Yellowjackets fell to 12-22 overall this season. They are scheduled to play host to Riverland today in a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m. RCTC is scheduled to close its season Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Ellsworth Community College.

Saturday, Riverland built a 6-0 lead after three innings of the opener, as pitcher Brandon Huhn took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Brad Kohn singled for RCTC to break it up, and the Yellowjackets scored once in each of the final two innings.

"(Huhn) is one of the better pitchers we’ve faced and he kept us off balance," RCTC coach Steve Hucke said. "(Losing pitcher) Brady Mosenden pitched a good ballgame, but we didn’t give him any support."

RCTC scored twice in the sixth inning of game two, but surrendered three runs in the bottom of the sixth to fall 7-2. The Yellowjackets entered the second game knowing they needed help to make the postseason.

"We were maybe feeling a little down," Hucke said. "We tried … things just didn’t go our way."
