Lourdes earns tie for division title

CANNON FALLS -- Things weren't looking so good for the Rochester Lourdes football team Wednesday night in Cannon Falls. The Eagles trailed unbeaten Cannon Falls 13-0 with two minutes left in the first half.

Then two big plays for the Eagles tied the score and turned the momentum in their favor. Lourdes' defense then kept the Bombers out of the end zone in the second half.

A 1-yard run by Jace Hadaway with 11:41 remaining in the game turned out to be the winner in the Eagles 19-13 upset win to end the regular season.

The win gave Lourdes a share of the Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division title for the second straight year. The Eagles share it with Cannon Falls and Lake City, each with one conference loss.

"What a game," said Lourdes coach Marv Peters. "In the last four or five games, we've really played well. We've been able to slow the run."

Peters said Lourdes was able to recover some fumbles when Cannon Falls had to pass and had problems with snaps from a shotgun formation.

He said Cannon Falls star runner Jered Chambers had some great 10-yard runs, but the Eagles were able to keep him from getting into the secondary.

"It was just a great game," said Peters. "Cannon Falls played great. We pulled off some tricks."

The tricks he meant were a reverse on a kickoff that allowed sprinter Kyle Vanselow to run 89 yards for a touchdown with 1:45 left in the first half. Then a hook-and-ladder play that put the ball in the hands of Ted Garry tied the game just before halftime.

Hadaway's game-winner came at the start of the fourth quarter.

Cannon Falls coach Ted Schultz said turnovers hurt them. The Bombers were inside Lourdes' 30-yard-line three times in the second half and fumbled twice. On the third one, time ran out, but a defensive pass interference call gave Cannon Falls one last attempt to tie, which failed.

Chambers rushed for 162 yards. Lourdes was not able to run against the Bombers' defensive line but passed for 153 yards.
