Lourdes rolls in section opener
Top-seeded Rochester Lourdes got off to a strong start in Section One, Class A girls soccer with a 9-0 win over Stewartville in first-round action on Thursday.
"The girls played well and we put some points on the board and it feels great to be 1-0," Lourdes coach Sarah Groven said.
The Eagles got goals from eight different players in the victory. They led 4-0 at the half on goals by Danielle Nonn, Jessica Sand, Maggie Burgart and Anna Resman. Resman added another goal in the second half. Emily Williamson, Kate Nowakowski, Sarah Kemmerick and Claire Rieder also scored in the second half.
Three of Lourdes’ goals were scored by defensemen. It didn’t hurt the Eagles on the defensive end, however, as Lourdes did not allow a single shot on goal. That made it easy for Eliza Larson to post her third shutout in four games.

"Our defense played very well tonight and it made a huge difference in our play," Groven said.
The coach said Claire Hunt, Molly Kuisle and Anna DiCecco also had strong games.
Lourdes will face No. 4 Kasson-Mantorville in the second round on Saturday night.
