Lourdes High School is the 2021 Rochester Area Scholastic Chess League Champion. It is the fifth time Lourdes has won the title.

The 2021 RASCL City Cup Championship was held Feb. 20.

The top five individual players were determined based on board position and their win/loss records. Michael Kern (12th Lourdes) was undefeated and took first place. Isaac Sellon (6th), who competes for Mayo, finished second and Robert Lanpher (11th Mayo) was third. Ethan Igel (12th Lourdes) was fourth and Aaron Carston (11th Mayo) took fifth.

The league's Swiss Invitational Tournament was held concurrent with the City Cup. It is for all Rochester middle school and high school players not participating in the City Cup. The top five finishers were Isaac Ahn (8th Schaeffer), Dumont Jones (9th Mayo) Ethan Haselius (11th Century) Peyton Behrends (9th Century) and Cole Hafner (10th Lourdes).

The RASCL All League Team, which has one player from each school nominated by the coach, includes Ethan Haselus, Century; Grant Jones, Lourdes; and Robert Lanpher, Mayo. Mayo Chess Coach Roy Truelson was named the Coach of the Year for the second time.

The RASCL City Cup Tournament is the culmination of scholastic chess in Rochester. However, Mayo, Lourdes and Century are still participating in the Minnesota Online High School League. The Minnesota State Chess Association State K-12 Championship Tournament, a six-round, two-day tournament, will be held April 10-11. All games, including the championship, are played virtually using the website www.lichess.com
