1 dead in 2-vehicle crash near Balaton

BALATON, Minn. (AP) — One person is dead and eight others injured after a two-vehicle crash in southwestern Minnesota.

The State Patrol says a van collided with an SUV around 3 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of U.S. 14 and a Lyon County road just east of Balaton (BAL’-uh-tuhn).

The patrol says a passenger in the van died. He is identified as 26-year-old Andy Wiersma of Chanhassen. Wiersma was the youth leader at the Evangelical Free Church in Marshall. He was a former basketball player at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall and had returned to Marshall less than a year ago.

Both drivers were treated and released.

Two people are in serious condition at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. One person is in good condition at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
