MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — CenterPoint Energy is warning customers who are behind on their bills that the state’s Cold Weather Rule protection is about to expire.

The rule protects residential customers who are behind on their gas bills from having their service discontinued from October 15 through April 15.

The gas utility says it has thousands of customers who owe a combined $68 million in past-due natural gas bills. They may have their gas shut off in about a week.

The company says people with past due bills should contact CenterPoint immediately to either pay their bill or set up a payment plan.

CenterPoint is Minnesota’s largest natural gas utility, serving nearly 790,000 customers in 259 communities.
