Minn. House approves deeper background checks for teachers

ST. PAUL (AP) — The Minnesota House has voted to look deeper into the licensing records of would-be teachers for evidence of sexual misconduct involving students.
Representative Karla Bigham (BIG’-uhm) says her bill aims to uncover cases where sexual misconduct didn’t rise to the level of criminal charges.
School officials would have to check for disciplinary action against an applicant’s teaching license because of sexual misconduct involving a student.

Bigham’s bill passed 129-1. A slightly different version cleared the Senate earlier this month.
