CHATFIELD — A rural Chatfield resident woke up early Sunday morning to see his motorcycle being driven away.
A crash ended a subsequent chase by the victim, but two people involved escaped by fleeing into a cornfield, said sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Scott Behrns.
The theft was reported just after 3:45 a.m. Sunday.

After watching his bike being driven away, the resident ran to the end of his driveway, which is on Olmsted County Road 136 about a mile north of Chatfield. He spotted the motorcycle, which initially had headed southbound, returning northbound on Olmsted County 136 — this time with a second rider on the bike.
The resident chased the motorcycle in his pickup, and the bike crashed near Olmsted 136 and 150th Avenue Southeast in Elmira Township north of Chatfield. The two riders ran into the cornfield. They were not located even after a search that included a sheriff’s police dog, Behrns said.
While investigating, sheriff’s deputies also found a pickup and an all-terrain vehicle that previously had been stolen. They were at the victim’s house and did not belong there, the resident told investigators.
